Gran Canaria is one of the Canary Islands and a lovely holiday destination. These seven Spanish islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean just off the west coast of Africa, Morocco.

The area of the island is 1550 square kilometers and the highest point is 1,949 meters, from where you can see the Teide on Tenerife in clear weather. The island is almost round, the distance from north to south and from east to west is 50 kilometers.
The north of the island is more humid and windy, with green valleys and volcanic craters, while the south is dry and desert-like with extensive beaches. The capital is Las Palmas, located on the northeastern tip of the island between two long beaches, Las Caletas and Alcaravaneras. Gran Canaria The interior has steep mountains with small villages,lot's of banana- and Aloe Vera plantations. Tourists are generally preferring the southern coastline, famous for its beaches many resorts and the 'Gay Nightlife' of Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas.
Gran Canaria is often called a miniature continent because of the big weather differences. The best weather is found on the south west part of the island in the Mogán area.

There are approximately 850,000 people of whom slightly more than 15% foreigners, mostly Europeans and living in the south part. The official language is Spanish, but in the south many speak English too. Yearly Gran Canaria is visited by more than 2,2 million tourists. Most of the tourists go to the south and south west of the island. The airport of Gran Canaria is called Gando and is located on the east coast of the island near Telde.
