Gran Canaria is in the West European time zone which has the same time as United Kingdom (Greenwich Mean Time, London). So you do not have a time difference.

The flight from London City Airport to airport Las Palmas Gran Canaria takes approximately 4 hours. There is only one airport in Gran Canaria. The distance from the airport to your destination in the south will be between 30 and 60 kilometers. That is usually a half hour to a full hour drive. For aiport transfers see our Menu.

The voltage is 220 volts. In Gran Canaria the European 2 pin plugs are used. You will need a travel plug adapter to use your electrical devices.

In Europe, and therefore also on Gran Canaria is an 'Identification Requirement' at all time. You need to always carry your passport or identification Card with you. When you find it unsafe to carry your passport with you, you can get an official stamped copy at a notarial office in Gran Canaria that you can show when necessary (not sufficient as a travel document).

To rent a car in Gran Canaria

Make sure you are in possession of a valid driving license if you want to rent a car in Gran Canaria. For renting a car, you often must be in possession of a credit card such as MasterCard or Visa. Visit our special page for cheap car hire in Gran Canaria.

Dog or cat to Gran Canaria

Do you bring a dog or cat to Gran Canaria? Please make sure to ask your vet in time for the necessary vaccinations. Different flight companies have different requirements to transport your pets, make sure you are well informed. The cat or dog needs a sleeping pill before the flight. Keep the pets passport with your own travel documents. Remember to timely notify the airline you are flying with a pet. Often, they are limited to only one or 2 pets per flight.
Your pet should also be protected against heartworm in Gran Canaria! Heartworm is a desease that is transferred by the bite of a heartworm infected mosquito. It is a big problem on the Canary Islands, but you can protect your pets by preventing them in time.

Shopping and Grocery shopping during your vacation

Grocery shopping you can do best in the larger supermarkets for the variety of products and better prices. Shopping center Atlantico in Vecindario occupies the largest supermarket: Carréfour. It has an extensive range of products and good prices. There are many other nice stores in this mall, like Zara and Zara home, Worten (electrical equipments) a petshop, healthshop, bodyshop, restaurants etc.. Vecindario is from the south (playa del ingles) halfway up to the airport, so a considerable distance. The best is to use own transport. Otherwise, take bus 69 from Maspalomas or Playa del Inglés. Other popular shopping places are Outlet shopping center 'Las Terrazas' and shopping center 'El Mirador'. Both just off the highway, between the airport and Las Palmas, in Telde. Shopping center El Mirador has a big Primark for cheap vacation shopping. Las Terrazas has a lot of outlets and a Mediamarkt.
The bigger supermarkets are often much cheaper than the small supermarkets in the touristic areas. The 'Mercadona' supermarkets are very good priced as well as 'Lidl'( in San Fernando).

Insects Gran Canaria

Normally there are few insects, and virtually no mosquitoes. Unfortunately there are cockroaches on the island. This you can see especially in summer, but also in winter you can encounter them. Harmless animals, but not many people like them around. The goverment does a lot to control them, like spraying insecticide. But it is possible that you see some cockroaches during your stay.

In supermarkets they sell good insecticide, ideal if you are having a corner in your home where they are hiding. It is a myth that you should not step on them, because of the eggs coming out, but should turn them. If you kill them and remove them completely there will be no eggs left. It's actually very difficult to turn a cockroach that is still alive. Most cockroahes that die (for example beacause of poison) will turn automatically.
Cockroaches you'll find especially near gardens and pools. To prevent them getting inside, keep windows and doors closed as much as possible, especially in the evening. In the warmest months of the year the cockroaches sometimes do fly inside.

Tap water Gran Canaria

It is better not to drink the tap water. It tastes and smells unappetizing and is unhealthy. For coffee or tea you can also better use bottled water. However, you can boil the water for cooking, like potatoes or vegetables. If you make a dish where the water remains in, such as soup, it´s preferably to use water from a bottle.
